Behavior Analysis

Chef says we need to buy more tomatoes: our signature dish can't be prepared without it. Make sure to add tomatoes to our order.

A day later: restaurant manager answers: not to worry, I have hired a person to get us the best tomatoes. New person does research, learns cherry tomatoes are popular, buys those, against chefs recommendation.

Chef has to modify the process to use the cherry tomatoes, and can't quite get the same result. Margins go down, so manager raises prices.

Clients complain that the prices on the menu are now higher, start looking at other restaurants.

Manager informs investors that kitchen costs have gone up, which is true (they're using a lot of cherry tomatoes), but does not mention the much greater cost of the new purchasing director. Investors instruct manager to hire a marketing director and to look for cheaper kitchen staff.

Chef, in despair, says, we just needed more tomatoes, the ones we always ordered.....no one listens to him.

Shortly after the manager announces higher prices, after all now he has two directors to pay.
